Here’s a closer look at some of the wine trade shows that have become must-attend events for anyone trying to understand where future trends in the global wine marketplace are headed.

Millesime Bio

Montpelier, France

Now in its 27th edition, Millesime Bio has become one of the premier organic wine shows in the world. Millesime Bio is a trade fair run by organic winegrowers for organic winegrowers, and can attract upwards of 1,000 producers each year. The 2017 wine fair attracted 4,850 visitors overall, and experienced a sharp uptick of 20% in the number of foreign visitors coming to Montpelier to learn about the future direction of French wine. The 2019 wine fair saw a 10% increase in footfall, and attracted over 6,200 visitors in a three-day period. 2019 saw 1,200 different exhibitors in 4 different conference halls from 22 different countries, with French organic producers accounting for 72% of the total exhibitors. The 2020 event will take place at the Parc des Expositions in Montpelier.

Hosted and organized by Beverage Trade Network, the Paris Wine Cup is one of the newest and most eagerly anticipated additions to the annual French wine calendar. The Paris Wine Cup is unique in that it will rank wines by three key variables - quality, value and package - in order to come up with an overall composite score on a 100-point scale. While the event takes place in March 2020, winners will be announced on April 30.

Grands Jours De Bourgogne

Launched in 1992, Grands Jours De Bourgogne has become one of the most important events for the Burgundy wine region of France. The event takes place every two years in March, when visitors from around the world descend on Burgundy for a weeklong celebration of wine. The 2018 edition of the event included more than 10,000 wines from 1,000 different wine growers, featuring all the biggest name wine appellations from Burgundy, including Chablis, Grand Auxerrois, Cote de Beaune, Cote de Nuits, Maconnais, and Cote Chalonnaise. Unlike other wine events that are condensed into just 2-3 days, the Grands Jours De Bourgogne takes place over the course of a full week.

Similar to the Grands Jours De Bourgogne, the Bordeaux Wine Festival is a celebration of the wines of one of the nation’s most famous wine regions.  Managed by the Bordeaux Wine Council, the Bordeaux Wine Festival is dedicated to the wines of the Bordeaux wine region. A hallmark of this event is the close and personal access that participants receive to top Bordeaux winegrowers. This includes a wine trail set up along the Bordeaux quays, guided tours of vineyards, wine tastings in spectacular chateaux, concerts, and a fireworks display.

What was once a small-scale event dedicated to small, independent producers has blossomed into one of the most prestigious wine events in all of France. The Salon Des Vins Des Vignerons Independants is organized by a professional wine organization (Vignerons Independants de France). The event is a premier place to meet individual winegrowers and hear their unique story, learn about the history of their winery, and establish important industry contacts. The most recent edition of Salons Des Vins Des Vignerons Independants attracted 5,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors. The event has even created a logo that independent winegrowers can use to promote the fact that they are committed to independent wine production.
