About Champagne Region

Champagne is the most popular sparkling wine in the world and it comes from the Champagne region of France located about 150 kilometres to the east of Paris. The Champagne wine region has 319 Villages Crus in four main growing areas The Montagne de Reims famous for complex Pinot Noir, The Vallée de la Marne, The Côte des Blancs notable with its Chardonnay and The Côte des Bar. There is a small appellation called CoteauxChampenois which is designated only for still wines with great freshness and elegance. As one of the coolest wine regions in the world with a latitude of 49°N and lies at the northern edge of the world's vineyard-growing areas, with lower average temperatures than any other French wine region. Sometimes the grapes are struggling to ripe enough for producing decent wine.

The permitted grape varieties to be planted in the Champagne regions are seven including the most important and dominant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and the supplementary Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Petite Meslier and Petite Arbanne. Every grape varietal has its particular qualities and advantages as Pinot Noir adds complexity, power and meaty notes, Pinot Meunier provides lively acidity and fruitiness and last but not least Chardonnay provides elegance and finesse to the Champagne blend as well as creamy roundness and stone-fruit aromas.

The styles of Champagne are extremely diverse as the region has a lot to give from the Non-vintage Champagne wines which are traditionally blended from grapes grown in different years. This style is very important for every Champagne house to establish the consistent house style, which the house will keep as a recognisable guideline throughout the years. The Vintage Champagne style is made only from the wines of a single excellent harvest of which the Vintage Champagne offers the most powerful and long-lived expression from the region. The rosés are another style to be enjoyed at any occasion as well as slightly sweet Champagnes which are a great companion to desserts. Accordingly, from which grapes have been used for the production of Champagnes there are two styles: Blanc de Blanc made only with white grapes and Blanc de Noir made only with red grapes.

The specific laws for Champagne production are strictly followed as the basic Non-Vintage Champagne must spend at least 12 months of ageing on its lees in the bottle after the second fermentation, and it must rest for 3 months after the sediment is removed, total of 15 months before release. The Vintage Champagnes must spend not less than 36 months before they come to the market. The region has a classification system which has designated Seventeen villages with Grand Cru and 42 Premier Cru status with the best and the most sought after Champagnes grapes are harvested in a single vintage and vineyard from Grand Cru Village. Some of the best Prestige Cuveés (the best wine from the range of each Champagne house) can be matured for at least 15 years after the release date from the house.
The Champagne wine region is one of the most intriguing and special in the world.
